HATX - FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
The process of building a court begins with a site visit by HATX Sports to evaluate the location and provide customized options based on your available space. After assessing the area, you’ll select the court’s size, layout, design, and color scheme. Once you approve the proposal, you’ll sign the contract, and the materials will be ordered. If any permits or HOA approvals are needed, the homeowner will handle submitting the necessary documentation to obtain them.
The next step is site preparation, which includes clearing vegetation, establishing the foundation, and managing drainage. During construction, concrete will be poured, the essential components installed, and the surface finished. When the project is completed, the area will be cleaned and ready to enjoy with your friends and family!
This topic has generated a lot of discussion within the court construction industry, and the best choice ultimately depends on your family’s specific needs. Tile surfaces are known for their durability and can be ideal for young children and multi-activity use, such as roller skating, riding scooters, or playing four square; and they often require less maintenance than acrylic.
Conversely, competitive players tend to favor acrylic surfaces because of their consistent ball bounce, lively playability, and superior traction.

To obtain a quote for a court, please contact us. The process typically involves scheduling a site visit where our team evaluates your available space and discusses your specific needs and preferences. Based on this assessment, we will prepare a customized proposal outlining the options, materials, design, and costs. Once you review and approve the plan, we will proceed with finalizing the details, signing a contract, and moving forward with the project.
Several factors can influence the cost of court construction, including:
- Size and Dimensions: Larger courts require more materials and labor, increasing overall costs.
- Design and Features: Custom designs, high-end surfaces, and additional features like lighting or fencing can add to the expense.
- Surface Material: Different materials (e.g., asphalt, concrete, acrylic) vary in cost, durability, and installation requirements.
- Site Preparation: Conditions such as terrain, vegetation removal, drainage, and accessibility can impact preparation costs.
- Permits and Approvals: Costs associated with obtaining necessary permits or HOA approvals may add to the total.
- Location: Regional labor rates, material prices, and transportation expenses play a role.
- Accessibility: Limited access or challenging terrain can increase construction complexity and costs.
- Additional Amenities: Installing accessories like nets, lighting, bleachers, or landscaping can significantly affect the budget.
HATX Sports will assist you throughout the entire process, ensuring you fully understand and feel confident about the costs involved in your court construction.
No. Pulling permits is the homeowner’s responsibility. If HOA approval is needed, that is also the homeowner’s duty, but we are happy to assist you with the process.
HATX will design and construct the court with proper drainage to suit your property. For more complex drainage issues, you may need to hire an outside landscape or drainage specialist to address those specific concerns.
Surface cracks in concrete are completely normal. Small, fine cracks up to 3mm (about the width of a quarter) are generally considered acceptable and non-structural.
To minimize surface cracking, post-tension slabs are recommended, as they tend to crack less, especially after tension is applied. Post-tensioning is especially advisable for painted surfaces since even tiny cracks can be visible.
Typically, concrete warranties last for about 1 year, but we provide a 2-year warranty specifically for post-tension slabs.
We recommend clients hire a landscaper during the 30-day concrete curing period. This helps improve and beautify your yard before we return to finalize the court surfacing. Since surfacing should be the final step in your backyard project, it’s important to coordinate with landscapers or irrigation specialists, as they may unintentionally scratch the court surface during their work. For more complex drainage concerns, involving a landscape company can also be beneficial.
Yes, existing courts can often be resurfaced. Resurfacing can involve applying a new coat or layer over the current surface to improve appearance, performance, and longevity. It’s a cost-effective way to restore a worn or outdated court without complete reconstruction. However, the suitability for resurfacing depends on the condition of the existing surface. If the court has extensive damage, a complete removal of the old surface may be required. HATX Sports can provide a professional assessment to determine if resurfacing is the right solution.
Post-tension concrete is a type of reinforced concrete where high-strength tendons or cables are tensioned after the concrete has hardened. This process involves installing the tendons within or along the concrete form, then applying tension to them once the concrete gains sufficient strength. The tensioning compresses the concrete, increasing its strength and reducing cracking, which makes it ideal for large, flat surfaces like courts and slabs that need greater durability and crack resistance. Post-tension is recommended for painted surface courts as it will minimize surface cracks.
The construction of a backyard court typically takes a couple of months, depending on factors such as the size, design complexity, site preparation, weather conditions, and any permitting or approval processes. On average, the project can be completed within 6 to 8 weeks from start to finish. However, the more complicated the build or elaborate the design it will take longer. For a more accurate timeline tailored to your specific project, it’s best to consult directly with our team.
If there is no direct access for a concrete truck to your backyard, several alternative methods can be used to obtain concrete:
- Small Batch Delivery: Use smaller concrete mixers or transit mixers that can navigate narrower or private pathways to deliver concrete in manageable amounts, which can be poured gradually.
- Mix on Site: Arrange for ready-mix concrete to be delivered in bulk and then manually mixed on-site using portable mixers, ensuring enough concrete is available for the entire project.
- Pumping Concrete: Utilize concrete pumping equipment, such as boom or line pumps, to transfer concrete from the street or driveway directly to the location where the court is being built.
- Transport Containers: For small areas, concrete can be mixed in wheelbarrows or portable containers and manually transported to the site
HATX Sports will help determine the best approach based on your specific property layout and access points.
